Severe thunderstorm warning: Level 4 for KZN
Motorists, residents urged to exercise extreme caution amid severe thunderstorm forecast for parts of KZN
KZN disaster management teams are on high alert as severe thunderstorms are expected in parts of the province this (Monday) afternoon until midnight tonight.
The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 4 warning with heavy downpours accompanied by strong winds, excessive lightning and hail for the north-western parts of KZN.
The affected areas include Big 5 Hlabisa, Mthonjaneni, Nkandla, Ulundi, Pongola and Nongoma.
“A cut-off low-pressure system extending to the surface is expected to be situated over the central interior of the country, with a surface high-pressure system east of the country resulting in onshore flow.
“As a result, isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over KZN.
“Some of these thunderstorms are expected to become severe over western parts of KZN, and will be accompanied by heavy, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail,” the weather service warns.
The bad weather conditions could lead to damage or loss of infrastructure, settlements, vehicles and major travel disruptions.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on wet roads and to adhere to the speed limits.
Transport and Human Settlement MEC Siboniso Duma said the Road Traffic Inspectorate is on high alert and is monitoring major routes across the province.
