Cruise season sets sail in Richards Bay
Bumper cruise season ahead for Richards Bay as port welcomes first passenger liner, Island Sky
The 2025/26 cruise season officially opened on Monday with the docking of Island Sky, the first of a dozen vessels expected to call in at the Richards Bay harbour in the coming months.
In their quest to boost the region’s tourism economy, Transnet National Port Authority’s (TNPA) Port of Richards Bay welcomed the vessel with representatives from King Cetshwayo District, City of uMhlathuze and the Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI).
Built in 1992, the passenger vessel sailed into the port carrying some 96 passengers and 75 crew.
The vessel’s arrival brings an influx of visitors eager to experience Zululand’s scenic landscapes, rich cultural offerings and unique local attractions, with an array of tourist attractions such as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Mtunzini trails and Dlinza Aerial Boardwalk in eShowe, among many others.
The Port of Richards Bay is working closely with the tourism sector to create enriching experiences for visiting tourists, thereby supporting economic growth in the region and promoting the city as a key coastal destination.
Richards Bay port manager Dennis Mqadi welcomed the arrival of Island Sky.
“We always appreciate that we can evolve and accommodate different sectors, which includes tourism,” said Mqadi.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome the crew and we continue to allow these activities to grow in our region.
“We appreciate all our partners who support tourism, and we launch this season with collaboration and shared purpose to position Richards Bay as a gateway to trade, tourism and various opportunities.”
Meanwhile, Island Sky captain George Hendry said it was wonderful to be back in Richards Bay after he visited about 20 years ago on a sister ship.
“For us in the cruise industry, our world has become smaller because of global political events, with many places no longer open to us.
“Coming to Richards Bay and South Africa is really lovely, and it is even more special to be the first ship of the season and enjoy the hospitality and the local area,” he said.
