Dagga-smuggling duo stopped in their tracks

Bags of dagga found on a goods train heading for Richards Bay, two suspects arrested

Two suspects, one an illegal foreign national, were arrested after smuggling dagga on a train from eSwatini on Thursday.

This follows a tip-off to the Golela Crime Prevention Unit that dagga had been loaded on a goods train heading for Richards Bay, passing Golela Railway Station.

Zululand police spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said, “It was established that the train departed from eSwatini at about 2am and passed Golela at about 3am, heading towards Hluhluwe.

Golela Police then escalated the information to the KwaMsane Crime Prevention team and Transnet Security for assistance.

Bags of dagga recovered during the arrest

The train was stopped at Mtubatuba and a thorough search conducted. Two suspects were found hiding in wagon 252 with a huge amount of dagga.”

She said both were charged with drug trafficking, while the eSwatini national was charged with contravention of the Immigration Act as well.

Both were detained at KwaMsane SAPS and are expected to appear at KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court soon.
