Man sentenced for stabbing ex-lover 15 times

Mtubatuba Regional Court sentenced to 30 years in prison for stabbing ex-lover 15 times

After stabbing his former girlfriend 15 times at a Hluhluwe hair salon in front of witnesses last August, Blessing Mokoena (37) has been handed a 30-year sentence for attempted murder.

The Mtubatuba Regional Court heard that Mokoena stabbed the victim in the back and chest before fleeing the scene. She was taken to a hospital, and Mokoena was arrested at his home.

He pleaded guilty, however, in aggravation of his sentence, Prosecutor Phumlani Khoza issued a victim impact statement in which the victim described how the attack had left her fearful of men.

She said it had been Mokoena who had initially broken off their relationship, even though she had asked him to stay with her.

Thereafter, he wanted to reconcile but she refused, although he did not appear angry.

The court deviated from handing a life sentence as Mokoena’s guilty plea was considered a sign of remorse.
