Join ‘comfort and carols’ evening in Empangeni
Unizulu Choir to set the tone at this year's Zululand Hospice Association's (ZHA) Tree of Light ceremony in Empangeni
Zululand Hospice Association (ZHA) will light up the night with at their Tree of Light ceremony this Thursday, 4 December at 5.45pm, taking place at the ZO grounds, 3 Baines Road, Empangeni.
The enchanting voices of the Unizulu choir will set the tone, and everyone is welcome to join the carol singing.
The choir’s most experienced trio will join this special evening with the iconic Dr Mfundo Ntaka on saxophone and Sya Mfeka on the piano.
Expect classic melodies such as Jingle Bells, Oh Holy Night, Silent Night, Hallelujah and Joy to the World.
Dr Bhekani ‘Mbhexeshi’ Buthelezi, a music lecturer and a choir conductor at the University of Zululand, said, “The choir strongly supports community projects. Music is healing, therapeutic and comforting. It is through music that we bring hope, comfort and happiness.”
He said the choir accepts invitations to perform for charity organisations, NGOs and for people living with disabilities.
About Unizulu choir
The choir was established in 2001 by a group of students from various departments with an aim to promote their musical talents within the university and beyond.
They sing choral, traditional, classical pop and gospel songs, performing in various countries such as UAE, Germany, and the United States of America.
They released a double album in 2024 titled Umkhonto kaShaka and In Collaboration With.
About the Tree of Light
This annual event has been going for more than 30 years, with ZHA bringing the community together. Everyone lights a candle and gathers around the Tree of Light, offering prayers to loved ones lost.
It’s a special evening for the whole family, with proceeds supporting ZHA’s palliative care patients.
Briyani and wors rolls will be on sale and pre-meal tickets can be bought at the ZHA’s charity shop at 18 Turnbull Street.
Entry fee is R20 per family and memorial candles are R10. For more information, contact ZHA on 035 7724910.
The public are requested to bring their own camping chairs, blankets and torches and to set up around the Tree of Light. Parking is opposite the ZO premises.
