DASO Nkandla to assist students through Sakhingomso campaign

DASO Nkandla says it will closely monitor the 2026 registration process higher education institutions to ensure fairness

As the 2026 academic year approaches, thousands of prospective students are expected to flock to higher education institutions in the hopes of furthering their studies.

To help students navigate the often-challenging registration period, the Democratic Alliance Students’ Organisation (DASO) in Nkandla has announced its readiness to support learners through its Sakhingomso Campaign at the Umfolozi TVET College Nkandla campus.

Research shows that First-Year Experience (FYE) programmes, which are designed to support a smooth transition into tertiary education, play a critical role in addressing the academic and psycho-social needs of first-year students as they adapt to the culture of higher learning.

However, despite the availability of such interventions, academic readiness, particularly in reading and comprehension, at tertiary level, remains a significant challenge for many students transitioning from high school.

KZN DA Youth Chairperson Sthabelo Ntshangase said the Sakhingomso Campaign is aimed at minimising the difficulties commonly experienced at the start of each academic year.

“These are the same challenges that have previously led to widespread strikes at many institutions, resulting in disruptions to the commencement of academic programmes.

“DASO Nkandla will assist students with registration processes, applications for financial assistance, and accommodation-related queries,” said Ntshangase.

Ntshangase added that the organisation could not remain idle while students continue to face the same obstacles year after year.

“We encourage students at the campus to engage freely with our task team, which will be on the ground.

“Students who have received SMS notifications for registration should approach us as soon as possible for assistance and to secure their spaces, as walk-in registrations are never guaranteed,” he said.

He further stated that DASO Nkandla will closely monitor the 2026 registration process to ensure fairness and inclusivity, adding that the organisation is committed to ensuring no student is left behind.
