Jersey Barriers project to strengthen border security

Jersey Barrier project to halt the movement of stolen vehicles from South Africa to Mozambique

Cross-border vehicle theft is being targeted through the Jersey Barrier project, which, after being initiated in 2018, is now 40 per cent complete.

It aims to halt the movement of stolen vehicles from South Africa to Mozambique, with project installation co-ordinated at the Kosi Bay border.

Progress was shared at the Operation Sukuma Sakhe District Development Model engagement chaired by district development model district champion, Dr Nomalungelo Gina.

The event was hosted by uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka at Ghost Mountain Inn in Mkhuze on Thursday.

The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster described the Jersey Barriers as a ‘key infrastructure initiative’ targeting vehicle theft in uMkhanyakude District.

The project involves all JCPS clusters, with budget confirmation pending at national level as the initiative advances.

“The Jersey Barriers project demonstrates how coordinated government action can deliver practical solutions to crime. We remain committed to supporting all initiatives that safeguard residents and property in uMkhanyakude,” he said.

The cluster confirmed a R52m budget to upgrade police stations in the region, with funds allocated for Mfekayi, Mkhuze and Ingwavuma satellites to improve infrastructure and service delivery.

Further to this, Eskom revealed that customers without proper official documentation will face disconnections, as valid identity documents are a prerequisite for electricity connection.

The utility provider will remove the meter and pole servicing the illegal connection, as these are increasing in uMkhanyakude.
