Commuters warned of ‘significant delays’ in new R6bn N3 project

Sanral’s R6bn N3 upgrade brings 5-year construction project, slashing speed limits and causing significant traffic delays for KZN commuters

The N2 and N3 national routes are under severe strain, with major construction projects running simultaneously, causing no end of chaos, especially during rush-hour.

While the projects already under way are set to take years to complete, another major road upgrade is set to begin.

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) on Thursday announced the commencement of R6-billion upgrades to the N3, warning motorists of expected traffic disruptions.

The affected area is an 11.1km stretch between the Marianhill Toll Plaza outside Durban and Key Ridge. The duration of the project is five years.

The likelihood is high that alternative routes, which are already busy commuter routes, will come under more strain as a result.

Sanral said the project forms part of its strategic programme to improve the country’s key freight and mobility corridor.

“Motorists and road users are advised that the impact of the construction on traffic will be significant.

“While every effort will be made to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow within the project limits, road users should anticipate delays and plan their journeys accordingly,” said Nondumiso Mabaso, Sanral’s KZN project manager.

Sanral added that the speed limit along the route will be reduced to 40km/h for heavy vehicles and 60km/h for light motor vehicles during construction.

Traffic accommodation measures will be implemented immediately and will remain in place for the duration of construction, continued Sanral.

In the event of major incidents within the work zone, traffic will be diverted safely via alternative routes.
