While snow has been cleared on several major routes in KZN, icy weather conditions are set to continue, with further snowfall expected in some areas this (Tuesday) morning.

Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel where possible, as roads remain wet and slippery.

The KZN Department of Transport said the Road Traffic Inspectorate and grader operators are deployed to the affected areas, monitoring major routes and places likely to experience more snowfall.

Update on major roads this (Tuesday) morning:

• Weather is overcast from Cedara towards Midway along the N3
• It is drizzling from Harrismith towards Van Reenen
• N11 Amajuba Pass is open in both directions
• Snow is beginning to clear towards Memel. Botha’s Pass to Memel is clear

Several roads were closed on Monday due to heavy snowfall in areas such as Kokstad and Underberg.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has this morning issued a yellow level 2 warning for disruptive snow over the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, east and south of the Free State, as well as along the Lesotho border, the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, south-eastern parts of Gauteng and south-western parts of Mpumalanga.

This, with strong winds and waves along the coast, could result in disruptions at small harbours or ports.

Power outages

The inclement weather conditions have also left several communities, including parts of Empangeni, without electricity.

Eskom KZN reported that the Kokstad, Franklin, Nottingham Road and Underberg areas were affected by snowfall and rain, while the networks in Pietermaritzburg, Margate, Estcourt and Empangeni were affected by severe rain and heavy winds.

“Technicians have been deployed to attend to faults in areas that are accessible. Some areas are inaccessible due to road closures from the adverse weather, and technicians are on standby to attend to faults once there is access,” said Eskom in a statement.

“Eskom appeals for patience from our customers as restoration may take longer than usual. The public is urged to treat all electrical installations as live and to stay away from fallen cables, damaged infrastructure, or any hazardous areas and to report these to local authorities immediately, or to Eskom.”
