According to reports from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Richards Bay Station 19 last week, the teenager, who was visiting from the Eastern Cape, had been swimming with his girlfriend on Thursday afternoon.
“When she got out of the water, she noticed he was in difficulty, appearing to be caught in rip currents, and disappearing in the surf zone,” said NSRI Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach.
All relevant role players joined the search, including the NSRI, SAPS, Mtunzini CPF, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers and IPSS Medical Rescue.
