WATCH: City mayor denies favouritism in market stall allocations

City of uMhlathuze Mayor hands over market stalls to beneficiaries

City of uMhlathuze Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi refuted allegations of favouritism in allocating Empangeni CBD informal market stalls during today’s official handover of the facilities to beneficiaries.

Addressing the media, Ngwezi said such allegations should be put to rest, arguing that they were unfounded.

“The identification of these beneficiaries was done by the municipality in partnership with the informal traders’ committee, who have been selling in the streets for years,” said Ngwezi.

Ngwezi assured the community that no new traders had benefited from the allocation process.

“The process, to me, was free and fair, and my door is open while I am still in office if they have any concerns about the issue of other beneficiaries,” said Ngwezi.

The municipality officially handed over 40 completed informal market stalls, out of the 101 planned.
