Fuel levy cut offers motorists relief

Temporary fuel price relief for South African motorists as government cuts petrol and diesel levies from 4 November

Temporary relief is on the cards for motorists next month, with National Treasury announcing that the General Fuel Levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol.

This will be effective from election day on 4 November until 1 December.

“Thereafter, the relief will continue at a lower amount until 5 January 2027. The diesel levy will be reduced by R1.50 per litre, and the petrol levy by R1 per litre,” said Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.

The temporary measure, which comes amid a persistent increase in fuel prices leading to the current record high, was announced by the finance minister while delivering the Medium-term Budget on Wednesday.

“These measures will provide R10-billion in support, at a fiscal cost of R10-billion in foregone revenue,” he said.

“To fund this relief, the R10-billion that was transferred to the Central Energy Fund will be returned to the National Revenue Fund and put into the Contingency Reserve.

“This intervention will help ease cost of living pressures without compromising the sustainability of the budget.”

Godongwana cited ongoing geopolitical conflict, which has pushed up global oil prices and led to a sharp rise in the cost of living for businesses and households.

“Because we have rebuilt fiscal buffers, the government is in a stronger position to respond, including by providing temporary fuel levy again,” he explained.
