Employers urged to release workers to vote
Workplaces are encouraged to support employees who wish to cast their votes on Election Day on Wednesday
Employers are urged to release workers to exercise their right to vote in the Local Government Elections.
While Election Day on Wednesday has been declared a public holiday, the Department of Employment and Labour calls on businesses that will remain operational, to allow eligible employees time to go and vote.
“The right to vote is a cornerstone of our democracy and one of the most significant gains of our constitutional dispensation. As a country, we must continue to safeguard this right and create an environment in which all eligible citizens are able to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
“We encourage employers and employees to work together in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
“Through proper planning and constructive engagement, workplaces can support employees who wish to cast their votes, while ensuring business operations continue effectively,” said Minister Nomakhosazana Meth.
The department further encouraged employees to communicate with their employers in advance regarding voting arrangements where necessary.
