Happy heart for Melomed patient
FOR more than a decade, Inkosi Norman Mathenjwa (62) had battled with an undiagnosed heart condition, and after an incredible nine-hour surgery at Melomed Hospital, he is finally able to live a pain-free life.
The Ngwavuma resident recalls being in and out of hospitals since his symptoms started in 2011.
‘My problem was chest pain, shortness of breath, and pains on my both arms,’ said Mathenjwa.
‘I was always exhausted. But worst thing was that I couldn’t walk 200 metres without needing to take a rest. When it was bedtime, I would use ice to reduce my pain because even painkillers didn’t help.’
Even after he was formally diagnosed with hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease, he was bounced between hospitals until finally consulting with Melomed Hospital’s Dr Mthiyane as a cardiothoracic patient.
‘During my visits, they showed me what was wrong through images and they explained to me the nature of the procedure that was required,’ he said.
He underwent surgery on 7 August. He now takes daily medication with no adverse side effects. ‘Today I can walk more than 2 kilometres without any challenges,’ said the grateful patient. ‘This has helped me gain back my skin tone. I am now back to normal!’
Commenting on his treatment, Mathenjwa said, ‘Melomed has a high standard of professionalism and Dr Mthiyane is a very dedicated doctor. The nursing staff was always there. I encourage them to keep up the good work. They are a beacon of hope to us.’
