Thanda pull off great escape
Thanda Royal Zulu came back with a late brace of their own to take a point from their game against Mthatha Bucks
TRAILING 2-0 after a dismal first half display, Thanda Royal Zulu came back with a late brace of their own to take a point from their game against Mthatha Bucks at the uMhlathuze Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
As has been their norm all season, dominance on the field was nullified by poor finishing and bad defence from set pieces as they conceded after a quarter of an hour’s play and again in the third minute of time added on in the first stanza.
Petrus Ngebo bagged both headed goals for the visitors.
After no doubt getting the hairdryer treatment at the break, the Amabhubesi looked a different team in the second 45.
They mounted wave after wave of attack but without reward until, with time running out, Michael Gumede headed home to the appreciation of the large weekday crowd.
The equaliser followed soon after when Nkosingiphile Ncobeni was cut down just inside the Mthatha box.
Boikanyo Komane stepped up for the spot kick and made no mistake with a low drive perfectly in the corner.
Thanda kept up the pressure and may have scored a few more times as the sands rolled out.
In the end, it was a draw that felt like a win, and one more point in the relegation fight.
Thanda travel to second from bottom Maroka Swallows this Sunday, before hosting last place African Warriors the following week in the final game of the NFD season.
