Start of new chess season

District chess tournament dates confirmed

LOCAL chess masterminds will go head-to-head at the first King Cetshwayo District tournament of the year on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February at the Richards Bay High School.

The open CHESSA rated time controlled (60/60) tournament is for the U10 to U20 age groups.

Notation is compulsory and all players need to attend in their school uniforms and bring pens.

Registration takes place from 7am to 8.30am on Saturday, followed by round one at 9am, with games ending at 7pm.

Sunday will see action get underway at 8am till 3.30pm, with the prize giving scheduled for 4.30pm.

The cost is R80 per player.

Competitors need to bring cash on the day for entry and email their entry forms and copies of birth certificates to griffithsbh@telkomsa.net or fax to 086 5167900 before 15 February.

For late registration, a fine of R10 will be payable on registration and the player will automatically lose the first round.

What players need to know

Players must participate in at least one of the three age group events to be eligible for selection for the King Cetshwayo age group teams.

• Grand Prix points will be awarded to the top 20 players in each age group per tournament.

• Grand Prix points for a player’s best two events in the three age group tournaments will be added together and will influence district team selections.

25-26 August – King Cetshwayo Closed Tournament.
