WATCH: Dynamic duo to run more than R1 000km for charity project

Matt Murray and Charles Raw will run a marathon a day for 35 days to raise funds for a northern Zululand school

It is just three days to go for two KZN Midlands men on a mission to raise funds for a northern Zululand school.

Matt Murray and Charles Raw will embark on a run from Port Alfred to Cape Town, starting this Saturday, 1 February.

Running the 1 222km in 35 days, they hope to raise R2.35-million for Velakukhanya Primary School in the KwaNgwenya community, between Nongoma and Vryheid.

They aim to provide over 400 learners with better infrastructure and a renovated administrative block.

Both men share a deep connection to Zululand and have travelled to the region since they were youngsters.

“This is a very special region to me, I grew up coming to this area, guided here for the last 5 or 6 years, and spent a lot of time with the people and wildlife,” said Matt, who runs Escape Safari Co tour company.

“The people living in this remote area are so in tune with nature and were so kind in passing their knowledge on to us.

“When the opportunity presented itself, it seemed fitting to try and return the favour, and hopefully provide the best learning environment we can,” he said.

“Our vision is to provide children with the educational foundation they deserve,” said Charles, director at Timber Solutions, who shares Matt’s passion.

The overcrowded school has an average of over 60 pupils per classroom.

Childhood friends since attending Howick Prep and Howick High School, the pair developed a love for running later in life.

“Together, we’re taking on almost a marathon a day for 35 days,” said Matt.

Their Running Wild campaign has already raised R20 000, but they hope to collect R67 142 daily or R1 923 per kilometre.
