St Catherines School 67th Birthday

St Catherine’s School has a rich history

There is always a reason to be happy at St Catherine’s School. This year the school is celebrating its 67th birthday – a wonderful milestone to commemorate.

St Catherine’s School was founded in 1955. Owned by the Dominican Congregation of St Catherine of Siena of Oakford, Natal, the school started with humble beginnings. A group of nuns from the Order of St Dominics came from Oakford Priory near Verulam to start an Outreach in the village of Empangeni. This was many years before the construction of the Richards Bay harbour and Empangeni was still a growing rural town, in need of a Catholic school for the local children.

St Catherine’s School officially opened on 15 February 1955 with two classrooms and 11 pupils – nine girls and two boys. By that October, 15 pupils had enrolled. The school continued to grow and by the beginning of 1958 the Zululand Observer carried the headline ‘Empangeni Convent filled to capacity’.

Today, 67 years later, St Catherine’s School is a reputable private Christian school, known for the high quality education it imparts on young growing minds.
