Building his dream one matchstick at a time

While many struggle to recall their dreams by sunrise, for creative Lason Maluleka (39) the pieces of his night memory made a perfect image as the sun interrupted the moon.

Not only could he remember all the tiny details about building small artifacts, but he managed to translate the images of his dream into a work of art

When he started building these artifacts using sand, matchsticks and boxes, many thought he was crazy, but for this 39-year-old man it meant a bright future.

‘I had never done anything artistic before. But when I woke up that morning I could make everything I had dreamed about. I was surprised and scared at the same time,’ he said.

Some thought this father of three from uMhlabuyalingana area practiced witchcraft to acquire his talent, but for Maluleka it was a beginning of his long-term dream of being an entrepreneur.

He polished his talent and is now slowly making profit from it.

‘I use sand to create images and am able to insert large photos into tiny bottles. For me it gets better every time and people are amazed how I can do it. I don’t have an answer, it just happens,’ he said.

Maluleka’s new dream is to extend his knowledge to the youngsters in his community. He believes this form of art could open doors for many.

‘One day I want to open a training centre where I teach them how it is done. Who knows, perhaps one day we can make it a huge project,’ he said.
