Suspect in custody after EMPD recovers firearms with filed-off serial numbers

A 26-year-old man was arrested after EMPD officers stopped a vehicle in Geduld and recovered two firearms, ammunition, cash and a speed point machine.

The EMPD recovered firearms and ammunition during a car search in Geduld on June 11, where they arrested one suspect while four others fled the scene.

According to the Springs police spokesperson, Sergeant Charity Zwane, the EMPD stopped a Renault motor vehicle with tinted windows.

“Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found five men inside and requested the driver to produce a driver’s licence.

“During the interaction, officers observed suspicious behaviour from the passengers and decided to conduct a search of the vehicle and its occupants.

“As the occupants exited the vehicle, they fled the scene on foot. Officers managed to apprehend one suspect, while others escaped,” Zwane said.

She adds that a thorough search of the vehicle was conducted, and two firearms were recovered with serial numbers filed off; two magazines were also found, one containing 10 rounds of ammunition and the other containing five rounds.

“In addition, a speed point machine, cash, a passport, and a driver’s licence were recovered from the vehicle,” she said.

Zwane explained that this happened shortly after an incident of a business robbery in Bakerton was reported.

“The complainant alleged that four men entered his shop, armed with firearms and demanded money and cellphones.

“The complainant was forced to lie on the ground while one of the suspects pointed a firearm at his brother, who was standing at the till point.

“The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash from the till while another suspect took an airtime machine from the shop. All four suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction,” Zwane said.

The recovered firearms and other items were booked in. Zwane adds that the arrested 26-year-old was detained at Springs SAPS.
