Drug awareness day

Drugs have contributed to the downfall of many communities, to help curb drug use an awareness day was held in KwaThema.

Social Development Ekurhuleni region in partnership with the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) held an drug awareness day recently.

The awareness day was held at the Bulithando Park in KwaThema where residents where educated about the dangers of substance abuse.

The purpose of the event was to educate the children, youth and adults about substance abuse.

Vodacom came as one of the sponsors for the day as it too believes in a drug-free society.

Popular Hip Hop artist, Reason, was there to motivate the crowd with his catchy lyrics and rhymes.

“Think of your future and ask yourself how drugs will affect all those dreams,” he said.

He spoke of many celebrities and sporting heroes whose lives and careers where cut short because of drug abuse.

The community was given pamphlets with information on the different kinds of drugs and their effect on the human body.

Questions were asked and answered by the different professionals present at the campaign.

A major topic on the day was the use of nyaope which is the drug of choice for most users in Kwatsaduza.

Although the drug is known to have aggressive and devastating effects on the user, many still continue to use the drug.

Members of the public were encouraged to disclose habits they had that could ultimately turn into substance abuse and to seek help.

Former Trompies kwaito group member, Eugene Mtetwa, who now works for the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), says events like these are needed.

“It is our duty to make sure that we raise as much awareness about drugs as possible to the future leaders of our country,” he said.
