Loving teacher passes
Rebecca Phokoane Ngwenya, affectionately known as “ma Ribs”, was born in January 1932 in Evaton area.
She attended Evaton Methodist Primary School and did her secondary schooling at St Thomas College.
She married the late Esau Ngwenya and was blessed with nine children.
She started teaching at Springs Mines School.
Ma Ngwenya was a people’s person with a warm, loving heart, humble and respectful.
She always motivated and encouraged people to better themselves.
Her belief was that every child deserves to be loved and have equal rights.
She believed in youth empowerment and social development and giving back to the community became part of her lifestyle.
She was involved in a youth organisation called “Youth Club”.
This movement operated in different schools, aimed at empowering young people academically and socially.
It instilled morals and encouraged members to give back to society.
It was awarded a leadership certificate in 1947.
Apart from being a choir conductor at Sechaba Primary School, she had a nursing background which enhanced her daily duties as a teacher especially dealing with children with different needs.
She died on the 21st after a sudden illness.
Her funeral will be held tomorrow at 9am at Word of Truth Church in Extension Two KwaThema, on the corner of September and Mduduzi Street.
She will be dearly missed by family, neighbors and friends.
