Prize money put to good use

School shoes, school jerseys and food parcels are some of the items donated by 59-year-old Rebecca Modise and members of Hlanganani Women's League.

The chairlady of Hlanganani Women’s League, was the recipient of the Afrisun Women’s Day Awards held late last year at Carnival City Casino.

The award had a cash prize of R25 000 which she had to spend on members of the community.

Rebecca has been a member of Hlanganani for the last 21 years, and apart from meeting for prayer every Thursday, the women visit prisons and homes to administer prayer.

According to Rebecca, 92 learners from six KwaThema schools, including Umsobomvu Primary School, Tsimong Primary School, Job Maseko Primary School, Nkabinde Primary School, Sakhelwe Primary School and Zamane Primary School, received a new pair of school shoes with four of these schools receiving jerseys as well.

The gifts were handed out before learners started their December school holidays.

The ladies of Hlanganani didn’t stop there, they also partnered with local civic organisations and identified 19 needy families who were given food parcels.

The award is ‘in recognition of the valuable contribution made in the City of Ekurhuleni’.

Rebecca says they chose schools because ‘they see children going to school with no shoes and torn uniforms’.
