Health4Men encourages HIV testing

Healthy living through sport and HIV testing.

Health4Men joined forces with local organisation Ekurhuleni Pride Organising Committee (Epoc) for a sport tournament on Saturday.

The event was held at Bulithando Park in KwaThema.

The day was aimed at encouraging HIV testing, for people who engage in male2male intercourse.

David Motswagae is an outreach manager at Health4Men. He said the organisation encourages a healthy lifestyle through sports and recreation.

“We promote health screenings like HIV testing because it helps us link people to the relevant health care,” David said.

Ekurhuleni is one of the cities targeted by Health4Men, where they train staff members working in government health institutions.

David explained that ‘after training 75% of the staff to effectively deal with M2M’, that institution is declared a competent site.

“After a health institution becomes a competent site, we are able to refer people and relieve pressure from our centres in Soweto,” David said.

Aerobics, dance, soccer and netball were played by teams from various parts of Johannesburg, including Tembisa and Daveyton. The trophy went home with the Tembisa male netball team, that defeated Sparrows, a team from Johannesburg.
