Duduza residents happy about land bill being passed.

Duduza residents welcome land bill

Two classroms of Zakheni Primary School were filled to capacity by residents of Duduza on Sunday.

They are former residents of Charteston, Emagogogweni and Emasakeni, who were forcibly removed by the apartheid government to Duduza.

Their meeting was a response to the restitution of land rights amendment bill, which was passed in the National Assembly on February 25.

The bill re-opens the process, which allows for those who were moved and descendents of those who have passed away, to lodge land claims.

The new deadline has been extended to December 31, 2018 from the previous deadline of December 31, 1998.

An estimated 50 000 households were moved from the Nigel areas to Duduza.

Kotsedi Mothibe is the deputy director of the research chief land claims commissioner, he was invited to give the community advice on the process and to answer their questions.
