Community march against drugs

Angry community members, police and the members of the Geluksdal Drug Action Forum marched on the streets of Geluksdal on Saturday.

The march was aimed at spreading a message of ‘no to drugs’. On the day community members were given the pamphlets containing the information about drugs.

Tsakane police social crime prevention manager, Constable Lebohang Ramaesa said the march was aimed at also increasing the awareness about the dangers of taking drugs.

Ramaesa said the Tsakane police will ensure that those who deal with drugs are being arrested and get the punishment that they deserve.

“We will soon be engaging on raids to fight against drugs in and around Tsakane, including Geluksdal,” said Ramaesa. George Reetley, chairman of the newly-formed Geluksdal Drug Action Forum said the march was organised following a huge increase of criminal activities such as theft and house break-ins in the area, allegedly committed by those who want money to buy drugs.

He said the forum hopes that after the march, the drug dealers and the addicts will be aware that the community is not happy about drugs and that it will do all in its power to fight against drugs. “Drugs have shattered many of the youths’ dreams,” said Reetley.

Community member, Rita van Zyl said residents are tired of the drug addicts who rob them of their hard-earned money and appliances to satisfy their drugs desires. “I lost count of how many times my home has been broken into by thieves who took our furniture and electric appliances,” said an angry van Zyl.
