The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Kwatsaduza region say they thought it best to spend Human Rights Day with the Mazibuko family in Phase Two, Thubelisha, Tsakane.
Tholakele Mazibuko (49) says a fire started in the bedroom on March 12, before spreading through her entire house, destroying all valuables.
Sub-region coordinator Siyabonga Tonga, said their visit to the home was the first day of ‘an ongoing project to help repair the damage to the house’.
“Our members have donated what we came with today and will continue assisting with what they have, as well as selling berets and T-shirts to raise more funds,” Siyabonga elaborates.
The EFF arrived in the home bearing clothes, house paint, a baby bed and cement, amongst other donations.
Tholakele, together with her three- and four-year-old grandchildren, were assisted out of the burning house by community members.
Paramedics arrived and treated her for smoke inhalation on the scene.
Speaking for the Tsakane police, Captain Petros Mabuza said a case of malicious damage to property was opened.
The police say they don’t suspect any foul play, as the family indicated that a heater was the cause of the fire.
“The total value of damages is estimated at R10 000,” added Mabuza.
