Public clean police cars

Fighting crime with clean cars

More than 20 police cars were given a wash on Monday, as a way of making a positive contribution to the community of KwaThema.

Members of Just Be Strong Crew (JBS), who reside in the Sector 3 area, which includes White City, Vergenoeg, New Payneville, Masimini and Extension Six, washed the state cars at the Habedi Police Station.

Muzi Sidu is the spokesperson of the 15-member crew formed more than a year ago, by drivers of Volkswagen Caravelle.

He said their aim is to start initiatives that will assist those who need their help in the community.

“We decided it would be better to spend our Easter Monday doing something productive, we then looked around our community, to see where we could assist,” says Muzi.

The crew’s initial plan was to clean a resident’s home, when that plan failed they approached the police station with an offer to clean the garden.

However, that too failed, because the garden had been cleaned recently. The men, aged from 23 to 39 years old, then came up with the idea of washing the cars.

KwaThema Police Captain Mandla Phori said the police appreciates the gesture as it shows that, “KwaThema is a better place to live, and there is communication between police and the community.”

He also added that others can learn from the example set by the JBS crew, and encourages other residents to also come and see where they can assist at the station.

“We hope to continue having a good relationship with the community and make KwaThema a crime-free area in the next 10 years,” concluded Phori.
