W/O Nel talks about Victim Empowerment Centre’s role
Warrant Officer Annette Nel talks about the role of the Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) in KwaThema.
With many incidents of crime such as domestic violence that take place during the festive season, W/O Nel encourages those who experience abuse to visit the centre for help.
The centre, that has been in existence for almost 10 years, has done many different awareness campaigns, including elderly abuse.
Nel explained that despite the fact that the centre has been going to the community to educate them about different abuses, it was not long ago when they found an old woman from KwaThema living alone with no food and in urgent need of medical attention.
She appealed to the community to use the centre which opens from Monday to Friday with volunteers who are always willing to help those who have been abused.
During weekends, victim support officials are available on standby.
“We talk to the victims and refer them to the relevant people for further assistance,” said Nel.
Nel said that the centre needs assistance from the community to donate items such as a TV set and paint to create a more friendly environment.
“The victims need to feel comfortable and at home when visiting our centre,” she concluded.
