DA opposes payment of bonuses to bus entity
The DA has opposed payment worth R500 000 in bonuses to personnel of the Brakpan Bus Company (BBC).
DA councillor Tiziana Burtone says the financials of the BBC have painted a dismal picture for years and the DA believes that all the parties represented in council were in agreement that this entity should be incorporated into the Ekurhuleni metro’s bus system and no longer kept afloat by ratepayers.
Burtone explains the adjustment budget and financial statements have indicated the “purchase of depreciating goods” and investment.
Burtone complains investment is meant to grow the wealth of a company and the state of the financials presented show this company is not making money.
According to Burtone the company is struggling against losses brought on by theft with the financials indicating over 10 000 cases of theft.
“This could be the tip of the iceberg, theft is a severe problem for a company which is bankrupt and receives help from ratepayers of Ekurhuleni, she says.
She concludes bonuses should only be awarded for a success and not a failure.
The metro had not responded by the time the article went to print.
