Women talk about International Day

Around the world women celebrated Internal Women's Day on Sunday.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

This year’s theme, ‘Empowering women, empowering humanity’ envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.

Women in Kwatsaduza shared their views about the day.

Khanyisile Dlamini from Tsakane said she wishes that on the day around the world, all women should host workshops to empower them to become successful and independent women.

“This day does not change anything for the women who live in poverty,” believes Dlamini.

Chynthia Shange from Duduza said she did not even know that there is such a day.

“Only rich and educated women benefit from special women’s day and the government does not care about women from the townships and rural areas who suffer the most,” Shange said.

One of the women from KwaThema, Lerato Mokoena said she is happy that the world recognises women and strives to ensure that women are empowered.

“Now the world needs to consider women for top leadership positions such as the election of women to occupy presidency seats,” she said.
