Old age home commemorates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Tsakane - Senior Citizens commemorated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day last Thursday.

The event, which was held at the Tsakane Old Age Home, saw more than 50 elderly people attending.

The senior citizens were educated about their rights and on what to do when they experience abuse.

Sister Betty Nyembe from Ekurhuleni Health Department encouraged the pensioners to ensure they do not allow their children to bully them into spending their money or buying them clothes.

“Your pension money is to take of your needs,” says Nyembe.

She educated the senior citizens about physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Nyembe urged the senior citizens to report abusers to police and to not protect them in fear of what they might do.

Tsakane Old Age Home manager Phoko Makubung encouraged the home's residents to report any kind of abuse to management or a social worker.

“We work to ensure a safe environment for our senior citizens,” says Makubung.
