Gogo’s yard still clean

Duduza - Gogo Christina Zama’s (85) yard is still clean and rubbish-free after it was cleaned by community members and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) in June.

Her yard was cleared of all the garbage and recyclables she had collected in the past and after a month, her yard remains in pristine condition and free of rubbish.

Gogo Christina who lives with her daughter Miriam Zama (35) and her two grandsons, says she will not be collecting recyclables anytime in the near future.

“My health is not allowing me to go out and look for recyclables,” says Gogo Christina.

The pensioner is now working as a domestic worker to provide for her family, as her daughter and grandchildren are unemployed.

She further explained that since she stopped recycling it has been difficult to put food on the table, because she doesn’t get money as frequently as before.

Miriam says she is relieved that her mother no longer goes out to pick up recyclables and waste.

“All I want now is for my mother to rest like other senior citizens and enjoy her old age,” says Miriam.
