How to do a breast self-exam

Kwatsaduza - October is breast cancer awareness month and by doing breast self-exams at least once a month, you can help detect the early warning signs of breast cancer.

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), one can do a breast self-exam in front of a mirror, while lying down or while bathing. Follow these steps:

n When you are in front of the mirror, you should check for any changes in the way the breasts look and feel.

n Look for dimpling, size difference or nipple discharge that might appear.

n You can also inspect your breasts with your arms at your side, arms over your head, by firmly pressing hands on the hips or by bending forward.

n When you are lying down, lie on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right hand under your head.

Use the four fingers of your left hand to make small circular motions while pressing firmly, moving up and down across your entire breast. Repeat this using the right hand for the left breast.

n When you are bathing, with your right arm raised, check your right breast with a soapy left hand and fingers flat making small circular motions up and down and across the entire breast. Repeat with your left breast.

If you see any changes discuss this with your nurse or doctor immediately.
