Illegal miners ambushed

Springs – On Friday, at about 1am, a group of illegal miners (number unknown) went underground at the Kingsway Shaft Nine, where a group of assailants (number also unknown) allegedly waited and attacked them.

According to the Springs SAPS spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the group of attackers then demanded that the victims should hand over whatever they had found underground.

“The illegal miners tried to run away, but the suspects shot at them.

“One illegal miner was shot in the right leg twice,” says Ramphora.

He adds that the other illegal miners managed to rush the injured man out of the shaft and called an ambulance.

He was then taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for medical attention.

A case of attempted murder has been opened at the Springs Police Station, but no arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
