Illegal miners arrested

Everest – Seven illegal miners were arrested at the Gugulethu Everest Informal Settlement last Thursday, following an operation conducted by the Springs SAPS.

According to the Springs police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the men were found with phendukas (machines used to process raw gold), five explosives and two detonators which are devices or small sensitive charges used to blow up explosives.

“The operation took place from 7am to 3pm and we were able to make seven arrests. The accused are still detained at the Springs Police Station, as we are waiting for the Department of Home Affairs to take the illegal miners to the Lindelani Camp, to await deportation as they are in the country illegally. Due to this, the seven men will not be charged,” Ramphora says.
