Community informed on help available to those who are being abused

Tsakane – To show support for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and children, various stakeholders of Tsakane gathered in Extension 10, to educate the community about the abuse of women and children.

In addition, the stakeholders shared information with the community on what help is available out there, for those who are being abused.

The various groups present included the Tsakane SAPS, Community Policing Forum, EMPD, Youth Desk, Love Life, religious groups, Twin Plug Organisation and the Department of Social Development, among other non-governmental organisations.

Tsakane police spokesperson, Capt Petros Mabuza, says this face-to-face interaction with the community is important, as it helps the police to better interact with residents on a more personal scale, while also bringing services closer to the people.

“Through this initiative, we are able to teach community members about what women and child abuse is all about,” he explains.

“The community members are also given informative pamphlets and addressed on help that is available to them, offered by the various departments, so that those who are being abused can get help.

“We encourage our fellow brothers to stop abusing women and our children, as these people are part of our families and, as men, we should be protecting them.”

Mabuza adds that the SAPS is pleased, as a lot of women in the area are reporting domestic violence, hence those who abuse women and children should know that it is something the police take very seriously.
