Awards for performing arts
Kwatsaduza - The Ekurhuleni Youth Club together with the National Art Council will host the Batsha Dance Awards on February 27.
The event is set to kick off at 1pm and will be held at the Duduza Resource Centre Main Hall.
The awards will cater for 10 groups which have already been selected by the club, ranging in different dance categories, from pantsula, kofifi, traditional, gumboot and ballroom dance.
“The main focus of the awards is to recognise artists and to reward them for working with us over the years.
“We hope this will motivate them, as Duduza has a lot of talent which is sometimes neglected.
“Through this we also hope to have people come forward to groom these groups so they can be able to be at a level where they can be professional performers,” says the director of Ekurhuleni Youth Club Vusi Yende.
He says that some of the groups that have been considered for awards include those of young people, women, ex-offenders and youth living with disabilities.
These groups don’t just focus on dance but also incorporate poetry, acting, music and drama.
“We ask for local government to support these groups and to help them, whether financially, with life skills or with instruments they may need and can use,” he says.
During the awards the selected groups will also be given the opportunity to render some items and one of those groups will be the Kuhle Youth Development from Duduza.
“We started working with the club in 2013 doing gumboot dance, poetry and music.
“We are happy to be selected for an award, as it will give us exposure for the group, especially since it will be the first time our group will perform for a large audience,” says founder and director of Kuhle Youth Development, Sifiso Msibi.
Entrance to the awards will be free on the day and community members are encouraged to go show their support.
