Senior citizens shown care

KwaThema – High school learners showed care for senior citizen of KwaThema.

Senior citizens of Leratong Senior Citizens in KwaThema were treated to lunch by learners of Phulong Secondary School on Monday after raising money through donations.

The learners requested donations from the school staff, learners and the community.

Educator Thembisile Sibiya, an educator at the school, led the project, which aimed to show senior citizens love and care.

She elaborated that in today’s society the community tends to forget the elderly, who are the gems of the community.

“I wanted to teach learners about the importance of taking care of senior citizens and showing them that they are remembered by the community.

“They need to be given attention because they are sometimes isolated and lonely,” she said.

Through their donation campaign they also managed to secure a sponsor who will give the senior citizens money to buy beads so they can continue making the artworks they can sell for extra money.

Chairperson of Leratong, Morongwe Godana, said this was a big deal for the organisation as they were buying material for their artwork from their own pockets.

“We appreciate what the learners have done for us by treating us for lunch, as we meet three times a week to do our artwork and exercise, and we don’t normally have lunch,” said Godana.

Sibiya added that they would continue to run such projects to help senior citizens of the community.
