Promoting maths and science

Duduza – Gibela has partnered with the Maths Centre and the Department of Education to bring a maths and science hub to Kwatsaduza.

On Tuesday the launch of the Maths Centre took place at the Duduza Multipurpose Centre where 450 learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 from schools from around Kwatsaduza and Nigel gathered to be briefed about the initiative.

This project is one of the ways Gibela is giving back to the community and investing in the youth of Kwatsaduza and Nigel, which are in the same jurisdiction as their plant in Dunnottar.

Speaking on behalf of the Maths Centre, Simeon Kaba says it will give support to maths and science students and teachers.

Their aim is to correct, restore and advance both teachers and students through a variety of programmes by utilising various tools and resources.

“We are an non-profit organisation that is assigned by funders in different areas. In this case Gibela has funded the project to come and assist in Kwatsaduza and Nigel. The Maths Centres will be situated at N.N Ndebele Secondary School in Duduza and Nigel Secondary School.

“The best students to produce excellent results will then be awarded bursaries to further their studies and gain skills,” he says.

Poovan Chetty from the Department of Education adds that for quite some time learners from this area have been neglected and with this project they will be able to ensure the development of teachers and learners takes place.

“We envision the project to be sustained through teacher-to-teacher development where maths teachers who have undergone the training will then take it back to their school to educate other teachers on methods to make maths and science teaching more effective in the classroom,” says Chetty.
