Spotlight on poverty alleviation

KwaThema – The KwaThema Men’s Forum recently organised for their community to be educated on farming, as a form of poverty alleviation.

The informative gathering took place at the KwaThema Skills Centre; and young and old were present to gain from the insight.

Cloutus Damba from Umsizi, educated the community on what farming is all about: its benefits, how to do it from their own homes; how to save water and ways of effectively growing; protecting and selling their produce.

The community were encouraged to farm as individuals or in groups in the community – to start small, have discipline and invest time to make this a succcess.

“We saw that the community needed motivation, as a lot of people don’t work.

“We therefore called young and old men and women, as we wanted individuals to develop themselves and be able to provide for their families.

“This is because we believe it’s important that even though you don’t work, you are still valued and respected; which doesn’t always happen in some families.

“Through this initiative, we hope the information that has been given to us, will help in dealing with poverty alleviation; so all homes can be better,” says Mduduzi Mthembu of the KwaThema Mens Forum.

Ronnie Lente (63) from Wright Park says what he’s learnt, he’s happy about – as it’ll help in improving the garden he already has at home.

“Though my space at home is small, I’ve already started a garden which I’m eating from.

“I’ve planted fruits and vegetables, so with some things I’ve heard; I can see I’m on the right track and I’m motivated to do more.

“On the other hand, other tips will definitely help me make my garden bigger and better,” he says.

Dinah Mbonani (28) from Tornado says she also learnt a lot.

“We’re sitting at home thinking there are no jobs, but now at least we know we can do things for ourselves.
