Unleashing kasi potential

KwaThema - J E Malepe teacher Sibusiso Mandela Mafuyanduna wants to help cultivate brilliant minds in the areas of science and mathematics.

“I really believe in the potential of the ‘kasi child’, and that is why I became an educator,” he says.

In the first year of his teaching career, Mafuyanduna was nominated in the National Teachers Awards for excellence in natural science.

Last year he was able to improve the pass rate in Grade 12 Physical Science at J E Malepe to 95 per cent – from 45 per cent in 2015.

“I have a method that makes it easy for the learners – all I need is a platform,” he says.

Mafuyanduna has since started a weekend and holiday programme where he and his staff tutor budding engineers and scientists.

“I decide to start Mafscience Private Tutoring to address the issue of poor maths and science results ekasi,” he explains.

“I want to see my learners getting distinctions. I expect nothing less.”

Mafscience holds sessions at Ntokozweni Primary School every Saturday.

The classes are open to Grade Nine natural science learners and Grade 10 to 12 maths, physical science and accounting learners.

“We also provide private tutoring for learners who cannot attend the classes on Saturdays,” says Mafuyanduna.
