Ward 79 prepares for O R Tambo games

Sake Kgaphola is committed to unearthing young talent for the O R Tambo Games later this year.

Tsakane – Sake Kgaphola is committed to unearthing young talent for the O R Tambo Games later this year.

The sports co-ordinator for Ward 79 believes that the games give amateurs the opportunity to show off their athletic abilities.

“I am focussing on grooming amateurs, between six and 20 years old, and sparking the desire to partake moving forward.

It’s development from the streets.”

Launched in 2005, the O R Tambo games see representatives of different metros compete in different sporting codes.

“We hope that more youngsters will join before we make the final cuts in October.”

Assistant coach Yanga Siko says working with the children is very rewarding.

“They keep me on my toes because they get bored quickly, so I need to think of ways to keep them interested.”

Kgaphola and Siko train the hopefuls at the Langaville Extension Eight grounds every weekday at 4pm.

“I still believe that our children would perform much better if as parents we were committed to supporting them.

Come to the grounds just to watch your child train,” adds Kgaphola.

He also runs the Langaville Athletics, Health and Fitness Academy.

“I want to make sure that the community is fit and healthy, both young and old,” says Kgaphola.
