Young children explore science
“The children will be motivated to explore science and this is a good thing for the future of science in the country."
KwaThema – Young scientists at Interchange Community Foundation Hub (ICFH) learned how to build a robot during a workshop hosted in Johannesburg.
The centre aims to develop young scientist in an aftercare programme.
Thokozile Mabena says the demonstration, with LEGO toys, showed the children how to build a robot.
“We are happy that the children have something to keep them busy after school.
“The children are motivated to explore science and this is a good thing for the future of science in the country.
“They will discover there is nothing difficult about science especially now that they are starting to learn about it at a young age.
“It warms my heart to see the children is so excited about science,” she says.
Mabena says the children will not only participate in the project but they will also take part in a competition to be hosted soon at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, Johannesburg.
“We hope they will represent us well and bring the prize home.”
Mabena says they are encouraging young people in the community to enroll for the afterschool programme.
“This initiative helps them to stay busy while learning about science and building friendships.
“It pains me to see young people in the streets having nothing to do while there are available programmes, which one day will help open doors for their future.
“We are also encouraging parents to be actively involved in their children’s extra-mural activities,” she concludes.
