Putting karate on the map

Sensei Jackson Kokong and his son Manqoba are putting Short and Sweet Shotokan Karate Institute on the map.

Tsakane – Sensei Jackson Kokong and Manqoba, his son, attended the Team Challenge Tournament 2017, earlier this month.

Manqoba (8) won a gold medal in the kata category after he outsmarted all his opponents.

“He had good composure and portrayed the true meaning of kata.

I am very proud of him and I see a lot of improvement, ” says Jackson.

The thirty-four-year-old sensei of Short and Sweet Shotokan Karate Institute won a gold medal in the kumite and silver for kata.

“The tournament was special because it was a celebration of the South African Karate President Sonny Pillay Hanshi’s 50th years of sporting excellence. ”

Jackson says that Hanshi gave him the opportunity to be an instructor by showing him the ropes.

He believes that the support of family has kept him afloat in the industry.

“I really want to urge private business to support us financially.

“It is not easy for us to get around, especially traveling to competitions and equipment to train.”

The sensei encourages parents to encourage their children to participate in sport and provide them the best support.

“I hope that our victories will encourage hopefuls to join the club. The younger the better.”

Sensei Jackson also attended the Shotokan Cup, in Turfontein last Saturday, where he won another gold medal in kata and silver in kumite.
