Ekurhuleni Municipal bursary increased to R100 million for more students to study
“I didn’t have any prospects of how I would be able to afford tertiary fees but this initiative has saved me.”
Tsakane – The municipality of Ekurhuleni has increased the municipal bursary from R10-million to R100-m.
This was revealed during the council budget meeting for the first quarter of the 2018/19 financial year held at the Germiston Council Chambers on Thursday.
Chief Whip of Council Jongizizwe Dlabathi says they are encouraged by this decision to ensure more young people have access to institutions of higher learning.
“It is evident that more than 800 young people have been afforded an opportunity to pursue their studies.
“We strongly believe by ensuring that if more young people are educated it will benefit the municipality and the youngsters’ families through the knowledge and skills they learn. They would then be empowered,” he says.
Cindy Dube from Tsakane is one of the beneficiaries of the municipal bursary.
Dlabathi says she is one of the many young people who took the opportunity to apply when it came along last year.
“She is now a student at the Vaal University of Technology and studying towards a national diploma in Sports Management,” he says.
Cindy says she is grateful for the opportunity she is being afforded to study at tertiary level.
“I didn’t have any prospects of how I would be able to afford tertiary fees but this initiative has saved me.
“I learned about the bursary after my mother heard about it during a community participation meeting.
“I was using an NSFAS bursary but unfortunately could not be funded in my second year of study.
“If it was not for this bursary, I would have been part of the statistics of varsity dropouts who could not pay the fees,” she says.
