Support group for prostate cancer patients
“If anyone has an open facility which we can use for our group sessions, please assist.”
Kwatsaduza – Can Survivor Cancer Support is calling on men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer and their care givers to join their monthly support groups workshops held at the Far East Rand Hospital.
The initiative was started in October 2009 to provide support for all cancer patients.
Prostate cancer survivor Ronnie Nkabinde says their meetings are made up of talks and presentations by invited speakers who are often professionals in the field.

“The discussions are centred around the patient’s diet, therapy offering the buddy support system where the patients can receive advice and support from the survivors and professionals.
“We also provide a platform for the patients to raise their concerns and answer their questions in a bid for them to find their feet again.”
“We are also inviting the care givers to the sessions because they too need information on how to treat and support the patients.”
Nkabinde says because of the journey he travelled when the doctors discovered that he had cancer cells, he felt the need to start the support group in the East Rand.
“I used to go for treatment in Johanesburg to support the patients in the ward.
“I saw the importance of the sessions on how I was able to beat the cancer and understand what I was dealing with,” he explains.
Nkabinde further explains they are looking to move the sessions to the surrounding township but need the help of the community.
“We need accommodation in Tsakane and KwaThema where we will be hosting the support group.

“We are concerned about a large number of our patients who cannot attend our meetings because they can’t afford travelling costs.
“If anyone has an open facility which we can use for our group session please assist.
“We also need sponsors for refreshments. We call on local business people to assist us in making this possible,” he says.
