More than 1 000 female learners receive school shoes

“The learners need to feel safe when they are in the school premises. We are concerned about the scourge of violence against young women in schools and at home.”

KwaThema- Over 1 000 female primary school learners from schools in Kwatsaduza received school shoes from Kutlwano Social Organisation on Wednesday.

The shoes were distributed at KwaThema Community Hall as part of the Women’s Month celebrations.

Kutlwano Social Organisation’s head of social and community welfare Sello Makiti says this is part of their annual contribution to the Women’s Month celebration.

“We identified 20 schools in the three areas, seven schools in Duduza, six in KwaThema and seven in Daveyton to benefit from the donation.

“We requested a list of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds to benefit from the project,” he says.

Makiti says as a social organisation they believe in the empowerment of young people through education.

“We don’t want the learners to skip classes because they don’t have school shoes.

“Through the year we donate to different batches of shoes in January for the secondary schools and mid-year for the primary schools.

“We are happy about the continued help we receive from the schools,” he says.

Makiti further urged the teachers to refrain from sexually assaulting the learners.

“The learners need to feel safe when they are in the school premises. We are concerned about the growing incidents of violence against young women in schools and at home.

“Men should respect women and this should not be questioned,” he adds.

Dumisane Mtshweni says they are concerned about some of the schools that are not co-operating with them by identifying the learners who are in need.

“There are schools that we identified but they failed to identify the learners because of poor communication and politics in the schools.

“We are urging the teachers to refrain from this because it deprives the learners the opportunity to benefit from such good initiatives,” he says.
