Police spoil the elders
“We are calling on the carers of elders to look after them and treat them with dignity.”
KwaThema – Members of security in the Ekurhuleni Easter Cluster took time out to have a cook-out for the elders at KwaThema Elderly Centre on Tuesday.
The event was aimed at spoiling the elders in the area with a warm meal for the day.
The elders were also given food packages.
KwaThema police spokesperson, WO Peter Tebeila, says they felt the need to spend the day with the elders and show them love.

“These are the most important members of the community who we often forget to make time for.
“They are often raped and robbed of their pension grant but are too afraid to report the crimes to the police.
“We aimed to ensure them that we are here for them and encourage them to speak out,” he says.
Tebeila says they cannot be able to fight crime while the other members of the community are living in fear.
“We are calling on the carers of elders to look after them and treat them with dignity.

“Just because they are now old doesn’t mean they should be treated like second-class citizens.
“They should not be kept behind locked doors but be allowed to interact with their peers in elderly centres.
“There is a lot we can learn from them. They are our life archives and we often go back to them to seek advice,” he says.
