Local business owners called to follow by-laws

“We won’t be able to succeed without the help of the community and it will seem as if the police are not doing their job.”

KwaThema – Councillor Johannes Sibeko of Ward 77 convened a meeting about some of the challenges the community facing concerning crime in the area on Saturday.

KwaThema police also attended the meeting to help address the challenges of crime in the area.

During the meeting, KwaThema station commander Colonel Mareketle Malapane educated the residents, tavern owners and foreign shop owners about the importance of following operational regulations and set by-laws.

“We still have foreign-owned stores closing their shops after 8pm even though the law clearly indicates they have to close at that time.

“This makes it easy for criminals to target and prey on these facilities.

“It also makes it difficult for the police to fight crime in the area because criminals target these stores because many owners still refuse to bank their money.

“We also have a challenge with people who hang out outside the stores because they rob young customers of the money they are supposed to buy goods with.

“The same men could be there to see if the money was collected on the day and end-up robbing the store,” she says.

Malapane adds they also face the challenge of tavern owners not closing at the agreed time of 2am, according to the by-law.

“They end up closing hours later which leads to women being raped and killed at these ungodly hours.

“We are calling on residents and owners to work with the police to fight crime in our communities.

“We won’t be able to succeed without the help of the community and it will seem as if the police are not doing their job.

“We are also calling on the residents to report any criminal activities they witness,” she further explains.
